This is a recommended shopping list of 6 items that every trombone player over the age of 15 should have. Below I point out more specifically why I recommend what I do. Where there is a choice of expensive and inexpensive I have indicated possible options as well as some cost comparisons of where I shop. In addition to these items, please have a look at the Equipment section of my Blog page (coming soon) for further materials for the aspiring trombone player.
Method books
| ARBAN
METHOD
Every serious student of high school age should acquire a relationship with Arbans Famous Method. The book I used when I was younger is the cheaper Mantia & Randall, but there is a great deal of knowledge and editing imparted by Joseph Alessi and Brian Bowman in the more expensive version. |

| MELODIOUS
ETUDES
In addition, the Melodius Etudes Volume 1 allows the student an opportunity to sing with gentle phrase and grow as a musician with simple melodies that can be played in a variety of registers. |

Accessories
| STANDS
I recommend the Manhasset Music Stand because it adjusts to a higher level than wire music stands and insures good posture during practice. |

|
TUNER A tuner provides a visual reference of good or bad pitch - which is crucial when you are playing a tuning slide! The Korg Tuner is a good buy. |

|
|
METRONOME
A metronome is essential. Music is an art form created in time therefore, good rhythm is a requisite for a good player. I prefer the DB-90 Metronome because it has many subdivision options that promote higher rhythmic clarity than the single "click" of the Quartz Metronome. |

|
SLIDE-O-MIX
Playing trombone requires the slide to move as freely as possible. To this end, I recommend Slide-o-Mix lubricant which is what I use on a daily basis. |

Reading Materials
| Not included in my shopping list, I must point out that reading from great masters helps keep students motivated. In addition to the reading provided by method books, I believe Also Sprach Arnold Jacobs can provide answers to any questions between lessons. Currently I can only find it for sale at Hickeys. |
