Suggested Materials

This is a recommended shopping list of 6 items that every trombone player over the age of 15 should have. Below I point out more specifically why I recommend what I do. Where there is a choice of expensive and inexpensive I have indicated possible options as well as some cost comparisons of where I shop. In addition to these items, please have a look at the Equipment section of my Blog page (coming soon) for further materials for the aspiring trombone player.

Method books

ARBAN METHOD

Every serious student of high school age should acquire a relationship with Arbans Famous Method. The book I used when I was younger is the cheaper Mantia & Randall, but there is a great deal of knowledge and editing imparted by Joseph Alessi and Brian Bowman in the more expensive version.

Famous Method (Mantia & Randall)
$28.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$28.95 @ Sheet Music Service (plus shipping)

Complete Method (Alessi & Bowman)
$56.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$66.45 @ Sheet Music Service (plus shipping)

MELODIOUS ETUDES

In addition, the Melodius Etudes Volume 1 allows the student an opportunity to sing with gentle phrase and grow as a musician with simple melodies that can be played in a variety of registers.

Melodious Etudes v.1: Bordogni (Rochut)
$13.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$26.95 @ Slidebone (shipping included) Schwartz ed.
$13.95 @ Sheet Music Service (plus shipping)

Accessories

STANDS

I recommend the Manhasset Music Stand because it adjusts to a higher level than wire music stands and insures good posture during practice.

Wire Music Stand
$14.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
9.99 @ Giardinelli (plus shipping)
$8.99 @ Woodwind Brasswind (plus shipping)

Manhasset Standard Music Stand
$39.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$34.99 @ Giardinelli (plus shipping)
$25.00 @ Woodwind Brasswind (plus shipping)

TUNER

A tuner provides a visual reference of good or bad pitch - which is crucial when you are playing a tuning slide! The Korg Tuner is a good buy.

Korg Chromatic Tuner
$21.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$19.99 @ Giardinelli (plus shipping)
$30.99 @ Slidebone (plus shipping)
$19.99 @ Woodwind Brasswind (plus shipping)

METRONOME

A metronome is essential. Music is an art form created in time therefore, good rhythm is a requisite for a good player. I prefer the DB-90 Metronome because it has many subdivision options that promote higher rhythmic clarity than the single "click" of the Quartz Metronome.

Dr. Beat Metronome DB-90
$159.00 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$159.99 @ Giardinelli (plus shipping)
$150.95 @ Slidebone (plus shipping)
$159.00 @ Woodwind Brasswind (plus shipping)

Matrix MR-500 Quartz Metronome
$19.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$17.99 @ Giardinelli (plus shipping)
$19.95 @ Woodwind Brasswind (plus shipping)

SLIDE-O-MIX

Playing trombone requires the slide to move as freely as possible. To this end, I recommend Slide-o-Mix lubricant which is what I use on a daily basis.

Slide-o-Mix Regular (lg.+sm. bottles)
$10.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
$10.99 @ Giardinelli (plus shipping)
$10.85 @ Slidebone (price includes shipping when added to another order)
$9.99 @ Woodwind Brasswind (plus shipping)

Reading Materials

Not included in my shopping list, I must point out that reading from great masters helps keep students motivated. In addition to the reading provided by method books, I believe Also Sprach Arnold Jacobs can provide answers to any questions between lessons. Currently I can only find it for sale at Hickeys.

Also Sprach Arnold Jacobs:Nelson
$22.95 @ Hickeys (plus shipping)
